How to cancel Planet Fitness

Planet Fitness does not let you cancel on the website, in the app, by phone, or by email. You cancel at the club you signed up at (your home club), or you send a certified letter to that same club. Policies vary by location and by the contract you signed, so read yours. This page is the usual path.

In person

  1. 01Go to your home club. That is the location on your agreement, not whichever club you use most.
  2. 02Bring a photo ID and your membership number if you have it (app, email, or a billing statement).
  3. 03Ask the front desk to process a cancellation. Get a written confirmation with the staff name, date, and last billing date.
  4. 04Photograph or keep that paper. If an annual fee or extra month hits later, you will need it.
  5. 05Many clubs want notice by around the 10th of the month to avoid the next month of dues. Confirm the cutoff at your club.

By mail

  1. 01If you moved or cannot visit the home club, send a cancellation letter by USPS Certified Mail with return receipt.
  2. 02Address it to your home club, not a corporate PO box you found online. Use the street address of that club.
  3. 03Keep the tracking number and the green card or electronic receipt. That is your proof they got it.
  4. 04Mail early. Clubs often date the cancel from when they receive the letter, not when you sent it.

Put this in the letter

  • Full name on the account
  • Current mailing address and phone
  • Membership number
  • Home club name and city
  • A clear sentence: you are cancelling the membership effective as soon as allowed
  • Today’s date and your signature

Fees and traps

  • Annual fee is commonly about $49 (sometimes about $39). It often hits near the anniversary of signup. Many members need the cancel received by around the 25th of the month before that fee. Confirm on your contract.
  • Commitment-term memberships can carry a buyout (often cited around $58). Month-to-month usually does not. Read the agreement you signed.
  • Deleting the app does not stop billing.
  • A freeze or hold is not a cancel. Ask which one they processed.

FAQ

Can I cancel Planet Fitness online?

Usually no. Online, app, phone, and email are not accepted at most clubs. In person at the home club or a certified letter to that club are the two paths that stick.

Can I cancel at a different Planet Fitness?

No. Even Black Card members typically have to cancel at the home club they joined, or mail that club.

Will I still get charged the annual fee?

If the club has not processed the cancel before their annual-fee cutoff, yes, and it is often not refunded. Ask your club for the exact date on your account.

How long does certified mail take?

A few days in transit, then however long the club takes to process. Send it well before the 10th if you want to dodge the next month of dues, and well before the annual-fee window if that is coming up.
