How to cancel Planet Fitness (2026)

Planet Fitness's official FAQ lists three ways to end a membership: log in to the member portal on planetfitness.com, visit your home club (the location where you joined), or mail written notice to your home club (use certified mail for proof). Your club must receive the request at least 8 days before your next billing date, and 8 days before the annual fee date to avoid that fee. Minimum-term memberships ended early owe a $58 buyout. Policies vary by location and state.

Difficulty: Online, in person, or by mail. Policies change. This is the path that usually works, not a substitute for your contract or the merchant’s current account screens.

Clearcut doesn't cancel subscriptions for you. These are the steps you take with Planet Fitness yourself.

What does not work

  • Deleting the PF App (it doesn't end your membership)
  • Phone or email (not listed as official cancellation methods)
  • Cancelling in person at a club other than your home club

Online

  1. 01First, find your home club and your dates: Home club = the location on your membership agreement, not the one you use most. Black Card access to other clubs doesn't change this.
  2. 02Log in to the member portal at planetfitness.com (or check your agreement) to find your monthly billing date and annual fee date.
  3. 03Count back 8 days from whichever date comes next. That's your real deadline for the club to receive your request.
  4. 04Online (member portal): Go to planetfitness.com and log in to the member portal (the same login as the PF App).
  5. 05Open your account or membership details.
  6. 06Look for the option to end your membership and follow the prompts.
  7. 07Save or screenshot the confirmation and effective end date.
  8. 08If you don't see the option or it doesn't finish, cancel in person at your home club or by mail instead. Don't assume it went through without a confirmation.

In person

  1. 01Go to your home club with a photo ID and your membership number (it's in the app or on your key tag).
  2. 02Tell the front desk you want to cancel (not freeze) your membership. You don't have to give a reason.
  3. 03Complete any cancellation form. Read the effective date and any remaining fees before signing.
  4. 04Ask for written or emailed confirmation showing the date, the staff member's name, and your last billing date. Keep it.

By mail

  1. 01Best if you've moved or can't get to your home club:
  2. 02Write a short letter with your full name, mailing address, phone, email, membership number, home club name and address, and a clear sentence such as: "I am requesting to end my Planet Fitness membership effective as soon as permitted." Date and sign it.
  3. 03Mail it to your home club's address (find it at planetfitness.com/gym-locations), unless your agreement lists a different cancellation address. Some agreements do, so check yours.
  4. 04Send by USPS Certified Mail with Return Receipt. Keep the receipt and tracking number.
  5. 05Mail early. The 8-day deadline counts from when the club receives the letter, not when you mail it.

Fees and traps

  • The app: deleting the PF App doesn't end your membership. Billing is set up with your club.
  • Phone/email: the official FAQ doesn't list phone or email as cancellation methods. Call your home club with questions, but cancel through one of the three options above.
  • Annual fee: charged once a year. The amount is on your membership agreement. To avoid it, your request must reach the club at least 8 days before the annual fee date.
  • $58 buyout: if your membership has a minimum term and you end it before the term is up, Planet Fitness's FAQ says a $58 buyout fee is required. If your membership has no minimum term, this doesn't apply.
  • Processing time: billing changes can take up to 7 days, which is why the 8-day notice rule exists.
  • Freeze ≠ cancel. Make sure staff process a cancellation.
  • Your agreement may add details, like a different mailing address. Read the one you signed.
  • Refunds: Check your agreement for refund terms on the annual fee and for any right to cancel right after signing.
  • Refunds: If you're billed after a properly submitted cancellation, bring your confirmation or certified mail receipt to the home club. If that fails, dispute the charge with your card issuer and include the same proof.
  • To confirm it's canceled: Keep your confirmation (portal screenshot, signed form, or certified mail return receipt).
