How to cancel The New York Times

The New York Times help: if NYT bills you, sign in at nytimes.com (or the app account area), open Account → Subscriptions (Manage subscription), choose Cancel, and confirm. Save the confirmation. If Apple, Google Play, or another partner is the merchant on your statement, cancel the NYT subscription with that partner. Gift subscriptions are usually managed by the person who purchased the gift; promo or student offers can have their own end dates—cancelling early still follows whatever the confirmation screen shows. Deleting the app does not cancel.

Difficulty: Online — cancel with whoever bills you. Policies change. This is the path that usually works, not a substitute for your contract or the merchant’s current account screens.

What does not work

  • Deleting the New York Times app
  • Signing out
  • Cancelling on nytimes.com when Apple, Google, or another partner is the merchant
  • A gift recipient cancelling a gift that only the purchaser can manage

Online

  1. 01Check the statement merchant: New York Times vs Apple vs Google vs another partner.
  2. 02NYT-billed: nytimes.com → Account → Subscriptions → Cancel. Confirm and save the confirmation.
  3. 03Apple billed: Settings → your name → Subscriptions → New York Times → Cancel Subscription.
  4. 04Google Play billed: Play Store → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → New York Times → Cancel.
  5. 05Gift or promo: use the manage link in the gift/purchase email or the purchaser’s account if Cancel is missing on your login.

Fees and traps

  • Gift and promotional subscriptions may not show the same Cancel control as a self-serve paid plan.
  • Access usually continues until the end of the paid period. Check the confirmation for the end date.
  • Cooking, Games, Athletic, or Wirecutter add-ons can be separate products—cancel each you do not want.
  • Do not invent phone cancellation fees—use the account or store path that matches your bill.

FAQ

Why don’t I see Cancel on nytimes.com?

Apple, Google, a partner, or a gift/promo purchase may control billing. Cancel with that merchant or the gifter’s manage link.

I got NYT as a gift. Can I cancel?

Often only the purchaser manages gift billing. You can stop using the account, but stopping charges usually needs the gifter’s receipt path.

Does deleting the app cancel my subscription?

No.
