How to cancel ChatGPT Plus (2026)

Cancel where you subscribed. On chatgpt.com: account menu → Settings → Billing → under Cancel plan, select Cancel. On iPhone: Settings → your name → Subscriptions → ChatGPT → Cancel Subscription. On Android: Play Store → Subscriptions → ChatGPT → Cancel subscription. Do it at least 24 hours before your next billing date. Uninstalling the app does not cancel.

Difficulty: Online. Policies change. This is the path that usually works, not a substitute for your contract or the merchant’s current account screens.

Online

01On the web (chatgpt.com): Sign in at chatgpt.com with the same account (email or Google/Apple/Microsoft login) you used to subscribe.
02Open your account menu (your name or profile icon) and select Settings.
03Select Billing.
04Under Cancel plan, select Cancel and confirm.
05You keep Plus features until the end of the current billing period.
06iPhone or iPad (App Store): OpenAI can't cancel Apple subscriptions. You have to do it through Apple:
07Open Settings and tap your name.
08Tap Subscriptions.
09Tap ChatGPT.
10Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.
11If there's no cancel button and you see an expiration date, it's already canceled. Deleting your ChatGPT account does not cancel an Apple subscription. Cancel through Apple first.
12Android (Google Play): Sign in with the Google account you purchased with, then:
13Open the Google Play Store app → profile icon → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions.

15Tap Cancel subscription and follow the prompts.
16Or on the web, open play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions, click Manage next to ChatGPT, then Cancel subscription.
17ChatGPT Business (formerly Team) workspaces: For a self-service Business plan: account menu → Workspace settings → Billing → Manage plan → Cancel subscription. Only workspace owners/billing admins can do this. Enterprise and Edu plans are handled through your contract or admin.
18Can't sign in?: If you were billed directly by OpenAI and can't access the account email, contact OpenAI Support through help.openai.com. Include the account email, the last four digits of your card, and your latest payment date. Never send your full card number. For Apple or Google subscriptions, recover that store account first.

Fees and traps

No cancellation fee. Plus is month-to-month.
Timing: OpenAI says to cancel at least 24 hours before your next billing date to avoid the next charge.
Uninstalling the app doesn't cancel. Neither does logging out.
Wrong account: many people have more than one ChatGPT login (for example, Google sign-in and an email/password). If Billing shows no plan, you're probably signed in to the wrong one.
API is separate. API usage at platform.openai.com is billed independently of Plus. Canceling Plus doesn't stop API charges.
Pro plans: the same steps apply to Pro.
Refunds: OpenAI says canceling stops future renewals but doesn't automatically refund past charges. Subscription fees are generally non-refundable, except where local law requires otherwise.
Refunds: If a refund is granted, access covered by that charge usually ends early.
Refunds: App Store / Google Play: refunds are handled by Apple (reportaproblem.apple.com) or Google under their own policies.
To confirm it's canceled: Web: go back to Settings → Billing. It should show your plan ending on a date, not renewing.
To confirm it's canceled: Apple: in Settings → Subscriptions, ChatGPT should show "Expires [date]" or appear under Inactive.
To confirm it's canceled: Google Play: Subscriptions should show ChatGPT as canceled with an end date.
To confirm it's canceled: Keep the confirmation email and check your statement after your old renewal date.

FAQ

If I cancel ChatGPT Plus, do I lose my chats?

No. Canceling drops you to the free plan. Your account and chat history remain unless you delete the account.

Does deleting my ChatGPT account cancel Plus?

It cancels subscriptions billed directly by OpenAI, but not Apple App Store or Google Play subscriptions. Cancel those through the store first.

When does cancellation take effect?

At the end of your current billing period. You keep Plus until then.

Can I get a refund for this month?

Generally no for web subscriptions, except where local law requires it. Apple and Google handle refund requests for store purchases.

I don't see a Cancel button in Billing. Why?

You likely subscribed through Apple or Google, or you're signed in to a different account. Check your statement to see who billed you.
